Celtics rescind offer to Theis - Iguodala available - what's Danny's next move?
As part of the procedure to maximize their remaining cap space, the Boston Celtics have rescinded the qualifying offer for Daniel Theis. Theis is now an unrestricted free agent.— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) July 15, 2019
Theis will ultimately re-sign with Boston using his Early Bird rights.
The numbers for European star, Vincent Poirier, have just been announced and we are looking at a 2-year/$5.1 million deal. The original deal for Daniel was reportedly two years at $10 million. As an UFA, the better chance is that he ends up in Boston, but he is free to go wherever he wishes.
So how about that 15th roster slot. I had broached the idea of elevating rookie guard Tremont Waters from his 2-way contract to a standard NBA deal. This young man lacks size (5'10") but not skills and poise. After the recent suicide of his dad, this could be the right move, allowing either The Green Giant, Tacko Fall, or guard Javonte Green to take over that second 2-way spot.
One other wild-card possibility would be 3-time Champion, Andre Iguodala. This guy has always been one of my favorites, and I admit the chances of Boston landing him are rather slim. It can be argued that the Celtics have no need for another wing, but my stand is that every team needs Iggy (a nickname that he hates). Another argument is that if the Celtics can't land a stretch-5, then go ahead with their throwback bigs (Enes Kanter, Vincent Poirier and Rob Williams) and surround them with mid-sized, versatile wings. Iguodala is certainly all of that.
“The two teams strongly pursuing Iguodala still are the Rockets and Clippers, I’m told, but both teams seem to be at a standstill.”— Stadium (@Stadium) July 15, 2019
Our NBA Insider @ShamsCharania with the latest on Andre Iguodala.
Don't expect any of this movement to stop or solidify anytime soon. Ainge feels he still does not have a Championship-caliber team, but it may not require a major move to gain significant ground. Cap space, luxury tax and timing are the variables here. An active mind can often be discerned on the face of the thinker. Danny's next possible move always shows on his - we just don't know what it is.
