The Celtics play the Pacers tonight and that makes it a great time to talk about our big men

Myles Turner sucks.  Can we please all agree on that?

It's the talk of the town here in Boston.  The Celts are 17-5 and rolling right along.  Gordon Hayward is back and healthy.  Marcus Smart has some healing up to do but the bench still looks great.  The one spot where we could possibly use an upgrade is at the 5.  Should we trade for a big man?  Maybe.  But please, stop with the "We should trade for Myles Turner" garbage.

Myles Turner is 6 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds.  And he pulls down 5.6 rebounds per game.  5.6  #pathetic.  On offense, he spends more time out by the 3 point line than he does in the paint, which explains the measly 10.9 points per game he averages. Yet he gets paid $18 MILLION a year after signing a 4 year deal in 2018 that pays him AT LEAST $72 million over a 4 year period. What a joke.  Watch this guy tonight and think about if you really would consider this guy an upgrade from our Theiss, Kanter, Williams 3 headed monster.

Our current center situation is not great, I will admit that.  All of our guys have weaknesses.  Theis is undersized.  Kanter plays atrocious defense.  Rob Williams sometimes plays like he smoked a giant J just before tipoff.  But they all have strengths, and combined they have been getting the job done.  Theis himself brings in 6.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.  More rebounds than Myles Turner....

The big man situation across the NBA is not good, if you think about it.  There is Embiid and Jokic - Great offensive players but one plays dumb and one is seriously out of shape.  Gortat and Capella are rock solid athletes and rim protectors.  Of course Id admit both of these guys would be upgrades over our current crop.  Then we have who - Marc Gasol? (Old but solid)  LeMarcus Aldridge?  Kevin Love?  I want no part of their contracts.  Which leaves us with one target.

Tristan Thompson.  Thompson is on the last year of a contract that pays him $18.5 million this season.  He plays the type of D we need.  He is great in pick and rolls on offense.  And he has proven that he can rebound the hell out of the ball in big game situations.  IF we make a trade for a big guy, this is who we should go after.  But it would mean giving up Thiess, Kanter and a few other contracts to make the money work.  There's probably no need to go messing with team chemistry like that right now.  SO we stand put. And we get back to the main point of this blog.

Myles Turner sucks.  But the Pacers are a decent team and they have been playing well recently.  It's tough to talk bad about the team and truth be told, I actually like Pacers fans.  Heck, I just watched Hoosiers the other night.  It's a classic.  But this Pacers team is merely a speedbump.  A speedbump that we will run right over tonight on our way to a matchup with a real big man, Joel Embiid and the 76ers on Thursday,
